Our group leads investment in insurtech startup making renting more inclusive

Husmus is providing innovation suited to real world renters to improve the private rental service. The Bracknell-based SaaS company has raised £400,000 in their first funding round to help develop their technology and marketing teams. Having bootstrapped so far, their first investment raise was secured by South East Angels and Alma Angels

Co-founder Sarah Wernér explains how the idea for Husmus came about: “When we became accidental landlords, we were dismayed to find that the experience was no better than when we were tenants. We started Husmus because we believe that everyone should enjoy renting. In our vision of the future, every renter and landlord uses Husmus to make their rental journey easy, uncomplicated and most importantly a pleasant experience. We believe that using technology is the best way to do this”.

The risk of private renting means landlords feel forced to set high costs and restrict tenants’ lifestyles. Humus utilises technology to improve the cover and efficiency of private renting. They help landlords identify low risk tenants and reward them with lower premiums. They do this by tracking tenant behaviour beyond credit scores.

Their thorough tenant referencing and fixed rate payments mean landlords can have peace of mind with renting to tenants without a deposit. Tenants don’t have to have their deposit money locked away, instead they can pay a fraction of it to get the whole coverage. Premiums are priced by tenant behaviour.

Since launch, Husmus has assisted over 1,000 tenants and grown the community to over 1,500 users. They have tested their predictive model of tenant risk to an accuracy rate of 99.8% and plan to reach 5 million users in 5 years.

Kristina Pereckaite, MD at South East Angels says “We are really excited about Husmus’ vision of making the rental process more inclusive and we were really impressed with the founding team and their milestones to date in a market that can be tough to break into. We are looking forward to seeing Husmus scale and supporting them on their mission.
